It is not what you have but where you put it that matters when it comes to book cases.
Look at the bookcase before. We can tell by the contents this person loves books, so when they finish reading one it goes to the shelves. We know they love their family because there are a dozen frames in this small bookcase. The glass figurines on parade on the top shelf take on the identity of visual clutter.
In book case after, all the same components exist but are placed in the book case with thought and purpose. We teach “Bookcases as a Work of Art” in our classes.
The books are still there but instead of lining up one after the other they are placed on most shelves with some lying down and some standing . Most of the family photos came back; this time however, they are used to enhance the books and function as bookends or added interest. After talking with the homeowner only the most precious glass figurines returned to the bookcase . Just because you own something doesn’t mean you need to always display it. We used the letter K but not both the K and the H.
With the addition of the large plate, wine rack, pears and a plant, the bookcase went from a place to “sit stuff” to a point of interest. It now combines dimension ,texture ,whimsy and the family ‘s personality is still intact. Look at your book case right now and what do you see?

Bookcases are such an important element of many rooms. You are so right, editing and then attention to detail with placement will make them wonderful everytime.
Love your article Carol. This arrangement lets my eye rest on that nice shelf with the large leaf and Pears. Wonderful advice!
I enjoy doing bookcases. I totally agree, it is an opportunity to display clients treasures. Well done! The after picture here looks so much better!
Carol, I looked at my bookcases and I see too many books and no room for accessories
that is by design of course! Another tip… rework bookcases seasonally, that way all of the beautiful collectibles are given their own special time to shine and can be enjoyed throughout the year.
